Passport Expired Mid-Trip? Here's What Travelers Can Do

Most countries won't let international visitors in unless their passport has at least six months of validity left. That rule may seem excessive for a one-week vacation, but it exists for a reason: if your passport lapses while you're abroad-because of an unexpected medical problem or a delayed trip, for instance-you could be in for serious bureaucratic trouble.

Still, a passport expiring during a trip isn't the end of the world. Travelers can follow set procedures to get a renewed document and salvage their plans.

Many nations observe the six-month rule, and some countries, including popular EU destinations, require your passport to remain valid for three months beyond your planned departure date. Airlines check expiration before international flights and generally won't board you if your passport falls short. Some airlines and cruise lines also have their own validity policies that differ from a country's official requirements, so check both.

If you entered another country and are allowed to stay past your passport's expiration, the protocol mirrors what you'd do if your passport were lost or stolen. Contact the nearest US embassy or consulate-the State Department's website has a search tool if you don't know where one is-and visit in person to have a new passport issued, which may mean traveling to another city in the country you're visiting.

You'll essentially apply for a new passport, bringing a 2x2-inch photo, identification such as a driver's license or expired passport, proof of US citizenship, your travel itinerary or tickets, a completed DS-11 application, and passport fees. The State Department says consular staff will do their best to help even if you can't present every document.

US citizens abroad with urgent travel plans usually receive an emergency passport valid for up to one year, though a full 10-year passport is also possible depending on the situation. Replacement passports are typically issued by the next business day. US citizens living overseas long-term may qualify for routine renewal by mail through the nearest embassy or consulate, which usually takes about four to six weeks plus shipping.

To avoid trouble, check your passport's expiration date and each destination's tourist visa validity rules before departure, note the locations of US embassies and consulates, carry a photocopy of your passport's bio page, and plan to renew at least six to nine months ahead-something many travelers in the US can now do online.
