Paris Diamond League Forges Ahead with Precautions Amid Scorching Heatwave
Despite the severe heatwave that has been gripping France, this weekend's Diamond League track and field meeting in Paris is set to proceed as planned. Organizers announced on Friday that the event will take place on Sunday at Charlety Stadium, following an agreement with the police prefecture. Earlier, Paris police authorities had requested the cancellation of the event, citing the strain on emergency services. However, the French Athletics Federation (FFA) has confirmed that the meet will go ahead, albeit with certain modifications to ensure the safety of all participants. The FFA has decided to stage the event in a condensed format, featuring only professional athletes and canceling all other activities. Top athletes such as Noah Lyles, Femke Bol, and Mondo Duplantis are expected to compete. To mitigate the effects of the heat, organizers have implemented several measures, including delayed stadium gate openings, enhanced medical services, and additional drinking water stations and shaded areas. The decision comes as France struggles to cope with the extreme weather, with over three-quarters of the country under a red weather alert for the first time. The FFA has emphasized that the safety of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and spectators remains its top priority, and it has been working closely with government authorities to monitor the situation. With temperatures reaching record highs, the FFA is taking a cautious approach to ensure a safe and successful event.
