Pack Your Meds: A Doctor's Advice for Keeping Your Stomach Happy Abroad

Travel opens up a world of new flavors, but your digestive system might not be as adventurous as you are. According to Dr. Olga Saina, an associate professor at Pirogov University, exotic foods and a sudden change in climate are common triggers for stomach upset on trips.

Dr. Saina explains that our bodies often react unpredictably when we swap our usual diet for unfamiliar dishes. Even the shift in weather and environment can disrupt your system. "The gastrointestinal tract is the first to respond to changes in food and water," she notes.

Her guidance is straightforward. In many parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, tap water can be a risk; sticking to sealed bottled water is the safer choice. More importantly, she advises travelers to prepare a small medical kit before departure. Essential items should include sorbents for toxins, rehydration salts to restore fluid balance, antispasmodics for cramping, and digestive enzymes to help process new foods.

This simple preparation allows travelers to explore with greater confidence, ensuring a minor digestive issue doesn't derail a long-awaited journey. Meanwhile, other health experts continue to clarify medical misconceptions, recently addressing common myths about diabetes and diet.
