Norovirus Outbreak Hits Cruise Ship, but Voyage Continues After Health Scare

A cruise ship carrying 1,700 passengers weathered a norovirus outbreak that forced an unscheduled stop in France, but has now been cleared to resume its European itinerary. The Ambassador Cruise Line vessel, which had already called at Belfast and Liverpool in early May, docked in Bordeaux, France, after a passenger died and dozens reported feeling ill.

Initially, the crew decided to remain in port as health authorities investigated. The suspected cause was norovirus, a highly contagious stomach bug known for spreading quickly in close quarters like cruise ships. On May 15, after thorough checks, the company announced the outbreak had been contained. "Guests can now disembark. All planned shore excursions will take place," the cruise line stated on social media.

The ship was expected to arrive in Spain on May 16, resuming its journey across Europe. The death of a passenger earlier in the trip had sparked concerns, leading to a temporary lockdown in Bordeaux. However, with the all-clear given, travelers were finally allowed to explore the French port city before continuing.

Cruise officials emphasized that enhanced cleaning protocols were implemented to prevent further spread. While norovirus outbreaks on ships are not uncommon, this incident highlights the challenges of managing health crises at sea. For now, the passengers are back on track, with their European adventure continuing after a tense few days.
