New Zealand's Streamlined 'Golden Visa' Attracts a Wave of American Investors

A simplified residency program for the world's wealthy is drawing unprecedented interest, with Americans leading the charge. New Zealand's Active Investor Plus visa, revised in April 2025, has seen 573 applications covering nearly 1,900 people since the changes—a dramatic increase from just 116 in the prior two-and-a-half years.

The overhaul lowered investment minimums, eliminated an English test, and slashed the required in-country stay for residency from years to weeks. Nearly 40% of applicants now come from the United States, with China and Hong Kong also showing significant growth; Chinese applications have more than doubled since last August.

For investors like Courtney Andelman, who runs a venture capital firm with her husband Jim, the visa merges personal passion with business sense. "It's a smart investment scheme," Andelman said, noting New Zealand's potential in deep-tech sectors like AI and biotech. The family, granted visa number 100, plans to split time between New Zealand and California without buying a home, partly to avoid straining the local housing market.

Industry professionals note the visa's appeal extends beyond finance. Robbie Paul of Icehouse Ventures, who has assisted over 30 applicants, said many American clients cite a desire for stability. "It's English-speaking, politically stable, beautiful, and very connected to the world," Paul observed.

The program has channeled $3.39 billion into the country, according to Immigration New Zealand. While the government hails the economic boost, the influx coincides with a sustained exodus of New Zealand citizens seeking better opportunities abroad, highlighting a complex economic picture.
