New Zealand Braces for Cyclone Vaianu as Forecasters Warn of Dangerous Weekend

Forecasters are tracking Tropical Cyclone Vaianu as it moves south from Fiji, warning New Zealanders to prepare for a severe weather event this weekend. The storm, currently a category 3 system with winds over 150km/h, is expected to approach the country on Sunday.

MetService has issued a strong wind watch for the entire North Island, noting the potential for damaging and life-threatening winds, heavy rain, and hazardous coastal conditions. While the north and east of the island are likely to see the worst of the rain, impacts could be widespread.

"We have several days until we see the impacts," said meteorologist John Law, describing the alert as an early heads-up for significant weather. The extended lead time on the watch itself signals the serious nature of the developing situation. As the cyclone's path becomes clearer, these watches may be upgraded to full warnings.

Meanwhile, a second powerful storm, Cyclone Maila, has intensified to a category 5 system in the Solomon Sea. While it poses no threat to New Zealand, heading instead toward far north Queensland, its strength underscores an active cyclone season.

The warning comes after a difficult period of extreme weather for the country. This year has already seen destructive storms, including fatal landslides in January and widespread flooding in February. The memory of 2023's Cyclone Gabrielle, the nation's most costly weather disaster this century, remains fresh for many communities now watching Vaianu's approach.
