New Russian Airline Rule Offers Lifeline for Missed Flights

RIA NovostiThursday, February 26, 2026

MOSCOW, Feb 27 – A significant update to Russia's Federal Aviation Rules provides passengers with a clearer path to salvage their return tickets if they miss an outbound flight. The new regulation, which takes effect March 1, establishes a specific procedure travelers must follow.

Under the revised rules, a passenger who misses check-in or boarding for their initial flight can still use their return ticket, but only if they contact the airline within two hours of that missed flight's departure. A key condition is that the return flight must be scheduled to depart at least 24 hours after the missed outbound journey. If these steps are taken and the fare conditions for the remaining flights remain unchanged, the airline is obligated to keep the subsequent reservations active.

The clause offers a formal safeguard that was previously less defined. However, the document also contains a stern warning: failure to notify the carrier within that two-hour window gives the airline the right to cancel all onward bookings without any obligation to alert the passenger. Aviation experts suggest the change brings more transparency to passenger rights, though they emphasize that timely communication with the airline is now the critical factor in protecting one's travel plans.
