New Passport Rule Leaves Dual Nationals Scrambling to Get Home

A sudden change to UK entry rules is threatening to strand British dual nationals abroad, prompting calls for an emergency grace period. From February 25, 2026, all dual citizens must present a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to board UK-bound flights, ferries, or trains—a rule many say they learned about only recently.

The Liberal Democrats have condemned the government's handling of the shift. "The lack of planning and haphazard communication has left dual nationals completely in the lurch," said Will Forster, the party's shadow immigration minister. He described people facing huge costs and long waits for passports, unable to visit sick relatives or attend family events.

One British man in Canada moved his flight to February 23 to see his dying brother, fearing he'd be barred entry after the deadline. A couple on honeymoon in New Zealand may cut their trip short. Others have canceled visits for memorials.

Immigration lawyer Sacha Wooldridge expects some pragmatism at the border to avoid chaos, but notes airlines face fines for carrying improperly documented passengers. Ryanair stated it would need UK government clearance to board such travelers.

Travel trade group Abta echoed calls for a grace period, citing 'considerable confusion.' The Home Office confirmed the rule, stating without the correct documents, boarding may be refused. Irish British dual nationals are exempt from the new requirement.
