New Guidebooks Reveal Hidden Joys of Kulikovo Field for Independent Travelers
The Kulikovo Field Museum-Reserve has released a fresh series of guidebooks aimed at independent travelers, part of the countdown to the 650th anniversary of the famous battle. Unveiled at a Moscow presentation, the guides offer routes across the historic battlefield and nearby towns in neighboring regions, blending history with nature for self-guided explorers.
Olga Kashirina, head of excursions and tourism at the museum, explained the thinking behind the project. “A trip needs more than a car and good company,” she said. “You have to plan your route, navigate road signs, and know where to eat and refuel. That can be a challenge. We created these guides for travelers who love discovering new angles and hidden stories.”
Earlier editions already linked Kulikovo Field to the Lipetsk and Kaluga regions. The latest release, “From Kulikovo Field to Old Ryazan,” takes a literary turn. Kashirina noted, “We wanted to appeal not just to history buffs but to those drawn to literature, music, painting, and architecture. These places connect to cultural giants—like the Vozha River battle, a dress rehearsal for Kulikovo, and the Sergei Yesenin museum, where he celebrated Russian nature and history.”
For those seeking an escape from city life, nature-focused guides offer something different. Olga Burova, head of natural sciences, described the approach: “We provide not just maps but bird’s-eye views, QR codes for quick location checks, and extra landmarks to help you find your way.” The guides also pack in zoology, botany, and history, turning a walk into an intellectual journey. Burova added, “We gave the routes playful titles to spark curiosity—like ‘What the Sandpiper Praises on Kulikovo Field’ and ‘Where to Find Happiness on Kulikovo Field.’” The series supports events leading up to the 2030 anniversary of the 1380 battle, a turning point that began Russia’s liberation from the Golden Horde.
