My Unshakeable Winter Travel Uniform

Packing for a cold-weather trip used to mean stress and overstuffed suitcases. After years of trial and error, I’ve refined my approach to a few reliable layers that work anywhere from a city break to a mountain retreat. This is the core kit I won’t board a plane without.
It starts with a black cashmere sweater. It’s not a luxury; it’s a strategy. It’s warm without bulk, dresses up or down, and can be worn for days on end. It’s the anchor of every outfit.
Next, a packable down jacket. Mine stuffs into its own pocket, becoming a pillow on the flight. When the temperature plummets, it’s my first line of defense, and its negligible weight means I never regret bringing it.
The supporting cast is just as deliberate: two pairs of thermal leggings, one pair of sturdy yet presentable jeans, and waterproof ankle boots with serious traction. Merino wool socks are non-negotiable. I add a large, pliable scarf that can double as an extra blanket.
The goal isn’t variety; it’s resilience and simplicity. Each piece serves multiple purposes, layers seamlessly, and handles everything a winter journey can throw at it. This compact system leaves room in my bag for souvenirs, but more importantly, it leaves space in my mind to actually enjoy the trip.
