Mongolia Sees Surge in Russian Tourists as Direct Flight Talks Continue

Russian travelers are heading to Mongolia in record numbers this year. According to Alexander Kozlov, head of Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and co-chair of the Russia-Mongolia intergovernmental commission, the number of Russian tourists visiting Mongolia in the first quarter of 2026 jumped by 1.6 times compared to the same period last year. Kozlov shared the figures in an interview ahead of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which runs from June 3 to 6. He noted that both governments are working to make travel easier. Officials are studying tourism markets, upgrading infrastructure, and expanding cross-border routes—including the historic “Great Tea Road.” Currently, flights to Ulaanbaatar operate from Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk. But a direct connection between Moscow and the Mongolian capital could be on the horizon. “We are in talks with our Mongolian colleagues about launching a direct flight between our capitals,” Kozlov said. If approved, the route would cut travel time significantly and likely draw even more visitors. The push comes as Mongolia positions itself as a destination for nature, culture, and adventure. With improved access and growing interest, the country is poised to become a favorite for Russian tourists seeking something beyond the usual beach or city break.
