Money-Smart Travel: A Financier’s Guide to Avoiding Hidden Costs Abroad

Moscow, May 24 – When you’re on vacation, nothing kills the buzz faster than realizing you’ve been overcharged on currency exchange. But according to consumer behavior expert Yulia Tarasova of the payment service “Apelsin,” a few simple habits can keep your travel budget intact.

Tarassova’s first tip is straightforward: avoid exchange kiosks in tourist hotspots. “The rates there are often terrible, and fees can quietly inflate your bill,” she says. Her advice is to stick with official exchange offices or bank branches, where terms are transparent. Always read the receipt before signing, and if you need cash, use ATMs from major banks after checking their conversion conditions.

Relying on just one payment method is risky, she warns. Not every shop accepts cards, and some places won’t take cash. Her solution: carry a bank card, a small amount of local currency, and a backup—either a second card or a QR-code payment option. Even with cards, the final amount can surprise you due to conversion rules. Before you leave, ask your bank about the exchange rate they use and whether any extra fees apply.

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is skimping on insurance. “Medical care abroad can cost far more than the policy itself,” Tarasova notes. A basic plan typically covers the most common emergencies and protects you from huge, unexpected bills.

For extra security, she suggests splitting your money into layers. Keep the bulk of your funds in an account that isn’t directly linked to your daily payment tool. Use a separate card or account with a small balance for everyday spending. And turn on transaction alerts—they help you spot suspicious activity quickly.

Even with careful planning, surprises happen: flight delays, route changes, urgent purchases. That’s why Tarasova insists on a financial reserve. “Having a cushion lets you handle these situations calmly, without turning to high-cost options,” she says. A little preparation goes a long way toward a stress-free trip.
