Middle East Air Travel in Disarray Following Military Strikes

Air travel across the Middle East has been thrown into chaos following a series of military strikes involving the US, Israel, and Iran. Major carriers, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Wizz Air, have cancelled or diverted flights to the region, citing immediate safety concerns. Iranian airspace is closed, and key hubs like Dubai International Airport suspended all operations after reporting minor damage and several staff injuries from an incident.

Passengers are facing severe disruption. Travelers described being boarded and then stranded on tarmacs for hours before flights were cancelled. 'We got on the plane and were literally about to taxi when the pilot said we're not going anywhere,' said Sarah Short, whose return from Dubai to Heathrow was halted. 'It's all so volatile.'

The UK Foreign Office has issued urgent new guidance, advising against all travel to Israel and Palestine. British nationals in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE have been told to shelter in place immediately, while those in several neighboring countries are urged to remain vigilant. The government confirmed its priority is the safety of UK citizens in the region.

John Henry, a tourist in Qatar, described hearing thuds and feeling tremors during an alert. 'You could see the vapour trails where they had hit,' he said, after Qatar's defense ministry stated it had intercepted missiles. With airspace closures extending into next week, airlines warn that schedules to Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, Tel Aviv, and other cities will be affected for several days. Heathrow Airport is advising all passengers to contact their airline directly for updates.
