Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium Ready to Write Another Chapter in World Cup History

Al JazeeraThursday, June 11, 2026

When Pelé spoke about Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, he didn’t just talk about the pitch or the stands. He talked about a feeling. “You need to be inside it, to feel it to understand. It’s unique,” the Brazilian legend once said. This summer, a new generation of players will get that chance as the iconic venue becomes the first stadium ever to host World Cup matches in three separate tournaments.

Construction on what locals call the “Colossus of Santa Ursula” began in 1961 and wrapped up five years later. More than 107,000 fans packed the stands for the opening match between Mexico’s Club América and Italy’s Torino. Since then, the stadium has seen it all: Hungary beating Bulgaria for Olympic gold in 1968, Pelé lifting his third World Cup trophy in 1970, and Diego Maradona scoring both the “Hand of God” goal and one of the greatest solo efforts in history during the 1986 quarterfinal against England.

After nearly two years of renovations, the 83,000-seat arena reopened in March with a friendly between Mexico and Portugal. Workers were still finishing touches just 48 hours before kickoff, but the stadium passed the test with a 0-0 draw. Upgrades include new seating, better locker rooms, improved lighting, and a rebuilt pedestrian bridge to nearby transit lines.

Teams visiting Azteca will face more than just Mexican fans. At 2,200 meters above sea level, the thin air can leave players gasping. Sports scientist Sam Shepherd warns of faster fatigue and higher heart rates. Some teams will arrive two weeks early to adjust; others will fly in just before kickoff to avoid the worst symptoms.

Mexico plays two group stage matches here and could return for knockout rounds, including a potential Round of 16 clash with England. The opening ceremony also takes place at the stadium, which will host five matches total.
