Mercedes Gives Its Marco Polo Campervan a Major Upgrade – More Headroom, a Starry Sky View, and a Removable Awning

Mercedes has revamped its Marco Polo campervan to take on the recently updated Volkswagen California. Billed as a smart companion for both travel and daily life, the new version gets a redesigned pop-up roof that offers nearly 15 inches of headroom in the rear – about four inches more than before. For stargazers, there's an optional sliding roof and panorama opening that promises an unobstructed view of the night sky. The pop top also comes with optional LED ambient lighting inside.

Mercedes didn't stop at the roof. The Marco Polo now features a redesigned awning that can be removed between camping trips, making the van easier to wash and more discreet when parked. New magnetic curtains allow for quick setup and takedown. Audiophiles will appreciate the upgraded sound system with eight speakers and a subwoofer tuned specifically for the van, plus Bluetooth playback even when the infotainment system is off. The 40-liter cool box is 25% more energy efficient, and there are new drawer slides, folding tables, and a revised bench seat control panel.

Inside, the van keeps its kitchenette with two gas burners and a sink, two 12.3-inch displays, rotating front seats, and a rear bench that converts into a bed. Power comes from a choice of three four-cylinder diesel engines: a 161-hp entry-level, a 187-hp mid-range, and a 234-hp top option. All mate to a nine-speed automatic with rear- or all-wheel drive. The fastest variant hits 62 mph in 8.8 seconds. Orders open in Europe on August 5. Pricing hasn't been announced, but the current Marco Polo starts at around €80,664 ($91,737).
