Mauritius Opens Its Doors to 100 Millionaires with New Investment Visa

Mauritius, the Indian Ocean paradise known for its white beaches and clear lagoons, is rolling out a new golden visa program aimed at attracting 100 wealthy individuals and their families each year. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced the plan during a parliamentary session on May 5, citing “multiple inquiries” from foreigners eager to relocate to the multicultural island, where languages like Urdu, Hindi, English, French, and Spanish are spoken.

The visa requires a minimum investment of $1 million within the first year, and successful applicants—along with their spouses and children—receive a renewable two-year permit. Perks include bringing pets, opening bank accounts, enrolling kids in private schools, and access to a concierge service that helps with moving businesses to the island. Investments must target high-value sectors such as fintech, AI, biotech, renewable energy, and global treasury, with the Economic Development Board monitoring progress.

“We want to maximize economic benefits by encouraging long-term stays and channeling funds into different sectors,” Ramgoolam said. Only 100 visas will be issued annually, and applications—once available on the government portal—will be processed in just five days, far quicker than programs in countries like Portugal, which can take over a year.

Golden visas have sparked criticism over housing affordability and money-laundering risks. To address this, Mauritius will implement a “robust, risk-based due diligence framework,” with screenings by the EDB and Passport and Immigration Office. Designated rental homes and hotels will be set aside for visa holders to avoid driving up property costs, and investors can also explore residency-by-real-estate options starting at $375,000.

For retirees aged 50 and older, a renewable 10-year permit requires just $24,000 in the bank. Remote workers can apply for a free one-year premium visa. The program aims to balance exclusivity with economic growth, offering a slice of paradise to those who can afford it.
