Major Winter Storm Aims for Eastern U.S. After Blanketing Central States

A significant winter storm is poised to traverse the United States this weekend, promising heavy snowfall, ice, and bitter temperatures. The system could set records for cold and create dangerous travel conditions, with forecasters also warning of possible power outages.

The U.S. National Weather Service reported Thursday that the storm will first develop over the southern Rockies and Plains, moving into the mid-South by Friday. It will then push eastward, reaching the mid-Atlantic and New England by Saturday and Sunday. Some effects in New England may not clear until Monday.

This will be the first major test for the Federal Emergency Management Agency under the second Trump administration, which took office in January 2025. The agency has emphasized streamlined federal coordination with state officials. As the storm's path becomes clearer, residents from the Plains to the Atlantic coast are advised to monitor local forecasts and prepare for potentially severe winter weather.
