Lithuania Shuts Vilnius Airport Over Suspected Drone - It Was a Flock of Birds

RIA NovostiSunday, September 13, 2026

Lithuanian authorities closed Vilnius Airport and scrambled at least one NATO fighter jet after an object was spotted in the airspace on Sunday, believed to be a drone. It turned out to be a flock of birds.

The national crisis management center confirmed the false alarm to Reuters. Lithuania's state broadcaster LRT reported that a yellow-level alert was declared in Vilnius and in the areas around Elektrėnai and Trakai.

The incident comes amid repeated sightings of Ukrainian drones in Baltic airspace. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have previously said they never authorized Ukraine to use their territory or airspace for drone attacks on targets in Russia.
