Lake Como's New Allure: More Than Glamour, A Destination Deepening Its Story

Lake Como’s fame with Hollywood stars is a recent chapter in a long history. For centuries, this Italian lake has drawn visitors, and now a fresh wave of investment is adding new layers to its appeal. By 2026, two significant hotel openings are slated: the Lake Como Edition in a restored Cadenabbia palazzo, and the Ritz-Carlton taking over Bellagio’s historic Hotel Grande Bretagne. In Cernobbio, the Miralago is being converted to luxury apartments with access to Villa d’Este’s legendary services.
This evolution isn't confined to hotels. In Como city, the recently reopened Palazzo Venezia now operates as a five-star property, its historic Caffè Cavour refreshed. Later this year, the playful Mama Shelter brand will arrive, signaling a shift toward contemporary design.
Yet the true rhythm of Lake Como is found in its annual events. Each May, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este transforms Cernobbio into a showcase for exquisite classic cars. Come September, the Lake Como Design Festival fills the area with installations and creative dialogue.
Beneath this polished surface, a more authentic character persists. Towns like Dongo hold profound history, captured in the End of War Museum detailing the area’s pivotal World War II resistance role. In Como, the Silk Museum traces the industry that built the city’s fortune, while artisan shops like I Vetri di Bellagio keep traditional glassblowing alive.
The landscape itself remains the primary attraction. Public ferries offer the classic perspective, but for independence, private boat hires reveal hidden villas and quiet coves. On land, hiking trails like the Greenway or the climb to Brunate via the century-old funicular reward with breathtaking views. For a moment of pure tranquility, seek out a wild swim at a public beach like Lierna or Onno, far from the private lidos.
Lake Como has always been beautiful. Now, it’s thoughtfully expanding its narrative, offering visitors both its timeless glamour and a richer, more substantive journey.
