Lake Baikal Sees Surge in Winter Bookings as Travelers Seek Frozen Wonders

New data reveals a significant spike in winter travel to Russia's Lake Baikal region. According to a study from Avito Travel obtained by Lenta.ru, short-term rental bookings in the Irkutsk region during the peak season of February to early March jumped by more than a quarter compared to the same period last year.

The figures are striking. Bookings for daily apartments in Irkutsk Oblast increased by 27% in 2026, while reservations for countryside properties rose by 28%. The average rental cost in the region starts at approximately 3,100 rubles per night. Neighboring Buryatia also saw growth, with apartment bookings up 15% and countryside lodging up 13%, averaging from 3,700 rubles per night.

Anastasia Bardina, Head of Guest Attraction at Avito Travel, notes that late winter presents a perfect and economical window for a Baikal visit. 'Housing prices are still at winter-season levels, and countryside properties in Irkutsk are even cheaper,' she explained. The season offers a packed schedule, from traditional festivals with ice sculptures and markets to extreme sports events as part of the 'Zimniada' winter games. 'There's truly plenty to do on Baikal right now,' Bardina added.

The surge aligns with broader travel trends. A recent survey naming Baikal the most desired domestic destination for Russian travelers appears to be translating into concrete plans, as the iconic lake's frozen beauty continues to draw crowds.
