Kaliningrad Tourism Takes a Hit: Heat and Logistics Blamed for Summer Slump

Kaliningrad, once a darling of domestic Russian tourism, saw a sharp drop in visitors during the summer of 2026. The culprit? A brutal heatwave paired with tricky logistics. Alexander Kurnosov, vice president of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, told NSN that the region is feeling the squeeze from a broader economic slowdown and consumers tightening their belts.
"If conditions improve, we can absolutely rebuild the flow," Kurnosov said. "The issue isn't the autumn shoulder season—it's the factors I mentioned." He pointed out that local hotels are well-positioned to weather the downturn. They can adjust pricing to protect margins and have built up financial reserves during better years.
Interestingly, just months earlier, reports highlighted Kaliningrad as a top alternative for Russians seeking European-style getaways without leaving the country. Now, the same destination is confronting a very different reality, where extreme weather and travel headaches are testing its appeal.
