JetBlue's Fort Lauderdale Gamble: Boom or Bust for South Florida Travelers?

Boca Raton TribuneMonday, July 27, 2026

For South Florida travelers, the choice between Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale airports just got more complicated. JetBlue is ramping up its Fort Lauderdale hub to 150 daily flights, adding new domestic and international routes. This fills the gap left by Spirit Airlines' collapse, but it also raises a big question: can JetBlue actually deliver?

The airline is betting big on South Florida, but its finances tell a different story. JetBlue carries $9 billion in debt and hasn't turned a profit in six years. Credit ratings have sunk to junk status, signaling serious default risk. Operational problems at its main bases in Fort Lauderdale, Boston, and New York only add to the pressure. For vacationers, that means flights can disappear overnight if a route doesn't make money fast, and a single storm can trigger days of cancellations.

So what should travelers do? By all means, take advantage of JetBlue's current deals and new routes out of Fort Lauderdale. The airline isn't going anywhere just yet. But don't put all your eggs in one basket. Have a backup plan. Avianca, Colombia's flag carrier, is already stepping up with new flights from FLL. Broward County should also be working to attract more airlines. JetBlue's expansion is a welcome boost, but in the world of debt-laden airlines, nothing is guaranteed. We'll keep watching this story as it unfolds.
