Jannik Sinner Pulls Out of 2026 US Open Due to Knee Injury

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the 2026 US Open, just over a week before the tournament was set to begin in New York. The Italian star announced the decision on Aug. 21 via Instagram, citing a right knee issue that has not healed as quickly as hoped.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year," he wrote. After returning to the court in Monte Carlo, Sinner realized he still needed more recovery time. He called the situation "very sad and disappointing," noting that New York holds a special place in his heart and that he was eager to play in front of the fans there.
This marks the first time in Sinner's career that he will miss the tournament. He had competed in seven consecutive US Opens since 2019, winning the title in 2024 and finishing as runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz last year. Alcaraz, who has been sidelined with a wrist injury, has confirmed he will play this year.
Sinner had already withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open earlier in August, saying his right knee had been bothering him. Despite this setback, he still has a major title in 2026, having won his second straight Wimbledon last month by defeating Alexander Zverev for his fifth Grand Slam crown.
