Indonesia Visa-Free Travel for Russians Remains Distant, Envoy Says

Russian tourists hoping for a quick end to visa requirements for Indonesia should temper their expectations, according to Moscow’s top diplomat in Jakarta. Ambassador Sergei Tolchenov told TASS that current discussions focus only on streamlining the visa application process, not eliminating it entirely. "We haven't even signed an agreement to simplify entry yet," he explained, "because Indonesian officials are pushing for provisions that don’t work for us."

Tolchenov described the talks as a standard negotiation that has dragged on for years. "First, I’d like to finalize and sign a simplification deal. If we succeed, visa-free travel could be the next step," he added. The ambassador’s comments come as a reality check for travelers eyeing Indonesia’s beaches and temples, where entry currently requires a visa on arrival or a pre-approved permit.

Meanwhile, a tourism expert recently ranked the top visa-free destinations for Russians in summer 2026, with Turkey maintaining its lead for value and quality. For now, however, those dreaming of Bali without the paperwork will have to wait—and hope the long-running diplomatic tango eventually pays off.
