India Draws Growing Number of Solo Russian Travelers Despite Safety Concerns

A new study from travel service Ostrovok and analytics firm Tiburon reveals a striking shift in Russian travel habits: one in four Russians now dreams of traveling alone, driven by a desire for solitude and fresh experiences. And the destination topping their list might raise eyebrows—India, a country that has faced international criticism for frequent attacks on female tourists.

According to the research, more than 40 percent of hotel and apartment bookings in India in 2026 were for single travelers. China followed close behind, with every third booking made by a solo tourist. Overall, solo travel across Asia jumped 35 percent year over year, signaling a clear trend.

Men dominate solo trips to China and Japan, while Russian women prefer Italy, Turkey, Thailand, and the Maldives for their solo adventures. Among neighboring countries, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Abkhazia, and Georgia are also popular choices.

But the surge in solo travel to India comes amid persistent safety warnings. The New Indian Express recently reported that several countries now advise female citizens about the risk of assault in India, calling the pattern a national embarrassment. Despite this, Russian solo travelers appear undeterred, with many prioritizing personal freedom and cultural discovery over safety concerns. The study underscores a broader shift in how Russians approach travel—more independent, more adventurous, and increasingly willing to go it alone.
