In Mexico, a Russian Blogger Finds Surprise, Respect, and Common Ground

Travel blogger Alexander, chronicling a five-year global journey with his partner, recently shared his observations on how Mexicans perceive Russian visitors. His account, published on his '#делайчехочешь' Zen blog, paints a picture of mutual curiosity bridging the distance between the two cultures.

The most common reaction, he notes, is a brief, stunned silence. "When I say we are from Russia, people freeze for a second," Alexander wrote. The follow-up is nearly always the same: a realization voiced aloud that Russia is "very, very far away." Another frequent point of fascination is Russia's climate. The concept of temperatures plunging to minus 30 degrees Celsius strikes the average Mexican as almost science fiction, Alexander suggested, comparing it to a Russian imagining life on Mars.

Beyond geography and weather, the couple's nomadic lifestyle itself drew thoughtful reactions. Recounting an encounter with a man at a seaside parking lot, Alexander recalled the man's simple, admiring statement: "That is true freedom." The blogger sensed no skepticism, only genuine respect for their chosen path.

He concluded that stereotypes shape initial impressions on both sides—Mexicans envisioning a Russia of endless snow and bears, Russians picturing Mexico as solely a land of cacti and sombreros. "It's only when people start talking to each other that everything becomes much simpler," Alexander observed. "Ordinary people. Ordinary conversations." In a prior post, he remarked that Mexicans smile far more often, a trait he felt Russia could learn from.
