How to Spot a Bad Hotel in Turkey, According to a Travel Blogger

Russian travel blogger Sasha Konovalova has shared tips for identifying a disappointing hotel in Turkey before you book. Writing on her personal blog, she warns that even five-star properties can fall short. The first red flag is food quality. Some high-end resorts rely on frozen meat, serve only questionable pizza and fries at snack bars, and offer just apples, oranges, and pears as fruit—even in peak summer. Second, pay attention to cleanliness. In budget hotels, plates may come with leftover food stuck to them. Third, look for patterns in small complaints: chipped cups, torn tablecloths, stained furniture, or cobwebs. “Each detail alone seems minor, but if one review mentions bad mugs and another says lounge chairs are broken, that’s a reason to pause,” she says. Konovalova also notes that some hotels use centralized air conditioning instead of room-controlled units, and economy options may lack slippers and bathrobes. Finally, she advises travelers not to assume all five-star hotels are equal. “If the price is noticeably lower than other five-star options, take the time to read reviews,” she writes. Earlier, the blogger compared all-inclusive vacations in Turkey and Egypt, noting that Turkey generally has more modern hotels with stylish interiors, new furniture, and quality appliances.
