Hong Kong’s Wild Side: Tourists Warned to Keep Their Distance from Boars, Monkeys, and Snakes

Hong Kong and Macau are generally safe for travelers, but the Russian Consulate in Hong Kong is urging visitors to watch their step—especially on the urban fringe. Consul Ekaterina Bogucharskaya told RIA Novosti that while city centers pose little risk, the outskirts are home to wild boars, monkeys, and snakes that can surprise the unprepared.

The warm, humid months bring a spike in mosquito activity, and with it a small number of dengue fever cases each year. Bogucharskaya recommended using insect repellent as a simple precaution. For those heading into nature reserves or hiking trails, she advised sticking to marked paths and staying alert in grassy or rocky areas where venomous snakes may be hiding.

Wild boars and monkeys are common in green zones on the city’s edges. Though these animals are usually shy and avoid people, the consul stressed that calm behavior is key. “Do not provoke them,” she said. “Keep your distance and stay quiet.” The warning comes as more travelers explore Hong Kong’s natural attractions—where the wildlife, it turns out, is best admired from afar.
