The service, which carried approximately 70,000 passengers annually through the stunning Highlands, is under threat due to a protracted safety dispute. Following a 2023 court ruling, the company must fit its vintage carriages with central door locking systems—a modification costing an estimated £7 million. This figure far exceeds the railway's annual profits, creating an insurmountable financial hurdle.
