Heathrow Airport Predicts Passenger Slump Amid Middle East Tensions

Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest hub, is bracing for a decline in passenger numbers and profits this year due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. According to its latest investor report, the airport expects to welcome 83.6 million passengers, a 1.1% drop from the previous year. The conflict is having a ripple effect on global air travel, with Heathrow citing 'notable downward pressure on traffic' as a result of the volatility in the region. Despite a slight increase in passenger numbers earlier this year, driven by travelers using Heathrow as a connecting hub due to disruptions at other airports, the airport's profits are expected to take a hit. Heathrow forecasts a £147 million decline in profits compared to last year, and a £60 million drop from its previous forecast. The airport is also navigating challenges related to its proposed third runway, with government analysis suggesting the project's economic benefits may be significantly lower than initially thought. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the potential negative impacts on local residents, including increased noise and air pollution, and decreased access to essential services. As the airport engages with regulators and stakeholders to address these issues, its new chair is working to resolve a dispute that could further delay the project.
