Healthy Passengers Allowed Off Cruise Ship After Norovirus Outbreak
Passengers aboard the Ambition cruise ship who show no signs of illness are now permitted to disembark, following a norovirus outbreak that sickened dozens and prompted a temporary quarantine. French authorities in the Gironde department lifted the restrictions for healthy travelers on Tuesday, while those infected remain isolated onboard.
The outbreak came to light after a male passenger died on the ship in France, with gastroenteritis suspected as the cause. Initially, all 1,700 passengers and crew were confined to the vessel. The British cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line later confirmed 49 cases of gastroenteritis, including one crew member. Lab tests at Bordeaux University Hospital traced the illness to norovirus, a highly contagious pathogen that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
Local officials stressed that no severe cases have been reported among the sick. Enhanced sanitation measures are now in place across the ship, and infected passengers will continue to be isolated until they recover. The decision to allow healthy individuals to leave came after careful monitoring.
Gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, is commonly caused by viruses like norovirus and rotavirus. Symptoms typically resolve within a few days, but the outbreak disrupted the voyage and raised concerns about cruise ship hygiene protocols. For now, the Ambition is moving forward with a revised itinerary, and passengers without symptoms are free to explore ports of call.
