Harmony in Motion: Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games Begin with Spectacle and Heart
The flame is lit. The 2026 Winter Olympics opened Friday, February 6, in Northern Italy, launching two weeks of elite competition in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Approximately 3,000 athletes from across the globe have gathered, ready to compete in events from alpine skiing to speed skating.
The Opening Ceremony at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium unfolded under the theme ‘Armonia’—Harmony. NBC’s coverage, led by Terry Gannon and Mary Carillo with analysis from snowboarding legend Shaun White, captured the vibrant pageantry. A performance began with dancers in white, evolving into a burst of color featuring costumes celebrating Italian culture, including a tribute to the country’s iconic moka pot. The musical climax came from Mariah Carey, who delivered a powerful rendition of ‘Volare’ before segueing into her anthem ‘Nothing is Impossible.’
Beyond the spectacle, the human stories defining these Games are coming to the fore. U.S. figure skaters Evan Bates and Madison Chock spoke recently about carrying the memory of teammates lost in last year’s tragic Washington D.C. plane crash. “Continuing to not take anything for granted would be the best way to pay homage,” Bates said. His wife and skating partner, Chock, added, “We’re so grateful for each day.”
For American hockey player Jack Hughes, the event is a family journey. He’ll compete alongside his brother, Quinn, and be supported by a large contingent of relatives. “Everyone that’s helped us get to this point can now share this with us,” Hughes said. “We’re just lucky.” As the ceremonies conclude, the focus now shifts to the ice and snow, where years of preparation meet their moment.
