Golden Ring Hosts Russia’s Biggest Bike Race for the First Time
The Kostroma region has become the first stop on the Golden Ring tourist route to host the national cycling race “Russia” — a massive sporting event that draws riders from across the country. Backed by President Vladimir Putin, the League of Heroes, and top sports organizations, this year’s course marks a historic first by winding through the historic cities of Russia’s Golden Ring.
Local officials say the choice of Kostroma is no accident. Governor Sergey Sitnikov has made tourism a key driver of the regional economy, and the numbers back him up. In 2025, 2.1 million visitors came to the region — an 18% annual increase — placing it among the top five most popular domestic destinations for several years running.
More than 700 cyclists — locals and out-of-towners — are taking part in the race and related events. Sitnikov welcomed the athletes, noting that biking is woven into daily life here. “In Kostroma and many district centers, you see adults cycling to work and kids riding to school,” he said.
Over the past five years, the number of people taking up cycling in the region has jumped 30%. The governor credits national initiatives and major investments in sports infrastructure — new pools, fitness centers, and renovated school gyms — for making it easier for residents to stay active. Today, two-thirds of the region’s population — more than 336,000 people — regularly exercise, earning Kostroma recognition from the Ministry of Sports as a leader in physical fitness.
“We love sports. We live sports,” said Alexey Anokhin, head of the regional parliament and local United Russia secretary. “You’ll leave with great memories of our nature, architecture, and hospitality. Good luck to all the athletes — Kostroma is always open for you.”
