Gatwick Grounded: Water Failure Leaves Travelers High and Dry

A major water supply failure at Gatwick Airport has left passengers without access to working toilets, bars, or restaurants. Travelers arriving Sunday morning found themselves unable to get hot drinks, wash their hands, or fill water bottles. The disruption, caused by a water issue in the nearby Horley area, affected both terminals and rippled into parts of Sussex and Kent.
Gatwick officials issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and confirmed that bottled water was being handed out to passengers and staff. “Other contingency measures are being put in place to ensure the welfare of our passengers,” the airport said. Meanwhile, SES Water, the utility company, reported interruptions across several postcodes and said teams were working to restore supplies. Customers in some areas experienced low pressure or no water during repairs.
Social media lit up with frustrated travelers. TalkTV presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer posted that there was no running water anywhere in the airport—no coffees, no flushing toilets, and no hand washing. One Facebook user wrote: “Gasping for a drink and crossing my legs right now. Not a great start to the holiday.” Former MP Michael Dugher urged the airport to let families use chairs in closed restaurants, noting that many were forced to sit on the floor. Passenger Roger Wood, en route to New York, told reporters he found an empty Wetherspoons and staff unable to serve because they couldn’t wash their hands. As of Sunday afternoon, no timeline for restoration had been announced.
