Fuel Shortage in Cuba Disrupts Russian Tourist Flights

MOSCOW, Feb 11 – Two major Russian carriers have been forced to significantly alter their flight schedules to Cuba due to a jet fuel shortage on the island. The Russian aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, confirmed the operational changes for airlines Rossiya (part of the Aeroflot group) and Nordwind.

The issue centers on difficulties refueling aircraft in Cuba. In response, Rossiya, which flies from Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport to Havana and Varadero, will operate a series of flights in the coming days solely to bring Russian tourists home. After these repatriation flights, its service to Cuba will be temporarily suspended until the situation improves. Nordwind, which also operates from Sheremetyevo to Varadero and Holguin, has made similar adjustments to its program.

Russian authorities stated the decision was made in the interest of passenger safety and convenience. The Ministry of Transport and Rosaviatsia are monitoring the situation closely and remain in constant contact with Cuban aviation officials. Both sides are reportedly exploring alternative solutions to resume normal two-way flight operations for citizens of both countries. Further updates on specific flights will be provided directly by the airlines, according to the regulator.
