Fuel Costs Ground Vital UK Island Flights

RIA NovostiTuesday, April 7, 2026

Airlines that connect remote British communities to the mainland are cutting services, leaving some islands more isolated. The cancellations are a direct result of soaring aviation fuel costs, compounded by a drop in passenger bookings.

Skybus has suspended its route from Newquay in Cornwall to London's Gatwick Airport. The carrier cited unsustainable fuel price increases, driven by Middle East tensions, alongside weaker demand. Similarly, Aurigny, based on the Channel Island of Guernsey, has announced a reduction in its flight schedule for the same reasons.

These routes are often described as lifeline services for residents needing access to healthcare, business, and government in the capital. The cuts highlight how geopolitical instability can have immediate, tangible effects on daily life far from the conflict zone.

Recent military exchanges between Israel, the United States, and Iran have disrupted a critical shipping lane. Approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has nearly halted. This bottleneck is applying intense pressure on global fuel prices, a cost now being passed down to airlines and, ultimately, to passengers in some of the UK's most distant corners.
