French Farmers Block Key Border Crossings, Snarling Trade with Spain

RIA NovostiThursday, January 15, 2026

The flow of goods and people between France and Spain has been severely disrupted as French farmers continue their protests, blocking several major border crossings. For days, key transit points like the AP-8 motorway in the Basque Country and the A9 near Perpignan have seen convoys of tractors and piles of agricultural debris render them impassable.

The farmers are voicing deep-seated frustrations over rising production costs, what they see as unfair competition from imports, and environmental regulations they consider suffocating. Their action, part of a wider wave of discontent across Europe, has effectively turned these vital arteries into parking lots, causing significant delays for freight and holidaymakers alike.

Spanish authorities report that traffic backups stretch for kilometers on their side of the frontier. The economic impact is immediate, with perishable goods at particular risk. While some alternative mountain routes remain open, they are ill-suited for heavy truck traffic, compounding the logistical nightmare for transport companies.

The French government has acknowledged the crisis, with Prime Minister Gabriel Attal pledging new measures. However, farmers' unions have so far deemed the proposals insufficient, indicating that the blockades—and the border chaos—are likely to persist as negotiations continue under pressure.
