Forget the Beach: Russian Travelers Seek an Escape From Routine

A new survey reveals Russian tourists are designing their getaways as a direct counterbalance to their daily lives. The study, conducted by the travel service KupiBilet and reviewed by Lenta.ru, shows a clear trend: the ideal vacation is defined by what it is not.

Contrary to the stereotypical beach holiday, only 26% of respondents pictured an ideal break as quietly reading by the sea. A further 18% preferred a secluded cabin in the woods. The most popular choice, selected by 40%, was an active vacation, whether at a resort with extensive amenities or on a hiking trip with friends.

These preferences break down along clear demographic lines. Residents of major cities and people over 45 more often seek solitude. Meanwhile, among those choosing active itineraries, 38% are under 35.

Experts interpreting the data noted a shift in mindset. "The core finding is that people don't just want to rest; they want to live a different story," a study representative explained. "The idea of a 'correct' vacation—either lounging on a beach or relentlessly trekking—is fading. Those who spend their year at a computer screen are booking hiking and rafting trips. People constantly in meetings and negotiations dream of silence and isolation."

The research underscores a travel philosophy where the destination is less important than the experience it provides in contrast to everyday reality. In related travel news, a separate ranking identified Magadan as projected to be Russia's most expensive domestic travel destination in 2026.
