Florence's Neptune Fountain Damaged in Bizarre Pre-Wedding Stunt
A 28-year-old tourist faces criminal charges after damaging Florence's historic Neptune Fountain during what she described as a pre-wedding challenge. The incident occurred last Saturday on the Piazza della Signoria, a public square fronting the city's town hall.
According to reports from Italian newspapers La Nazione and Corriere della Sera, the woman climbed over the fountain's protective barrier and then scaled the statue itself. She told police she was attempting to touch a specific part of the Neptune statue as part of a ritual before her marriage. To avoid entering the water, she climbed directly onto the legs of one of the marble horses that form part of the sculptural group.
Her actions caused what authorities call "small but significant" damage to the 16th-century monument, a masterpiece by architect Bartolomeo Ammanati. The legs of the horses and a decorative frieze she gripped were harmed. Police officers nearby intervened immediately, ordering her down and identifying her.
She has now been formally charged with damaging an object of artistic and architectural heritage. Preliminary estimates place the cost of restoration at five thousand euros. The fountain, locally nicknamed 'Il Biancone,' is a central feature of the UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Florentine Renaissance art, making the legal consequences for such damage particularly severe.
