Firefighters Scramble Across Southern Europe as Wildfires Threaten Holiday Hotspots

The battle against wildfires in France, Spain and Italy is entering a critical phase as a fresh heatwave looms. In Spain, a blaze in Ávila has become the country's largest on record, scorching 50,000 hectares, while two more fires near Madrid have pushed the total burned area around the capital to 70,000 hectares. French authorities describe the Gironde fire, which has already consumed 42,000 hectares and forced 220,000 people to evacuate, as extremely intense and unpredictable.

For travelers, the situation is unsettling. Popular destinations near Bordeaux face thick smoke that has triggered health warnings. Elderly visitors, pregnant women and anyone with respiratory issues are urged to wear FFP2 masks and avoid outdoor activity. In Italy, tourists were evacuated by sea from campsites on the Gargano peninsula as a wildfire pushed toward beaches. With temperatures expected to climb to 40°C from Wednesday, conditions could worsen.

European officials say this wildfire season—which started in April and may last until November—is unprecedented. Spain has seen six times more forest burned than last year, and France has surpassed its 2025 total. The European Commission is sending planes and firefighting teams, but governments acknowledge they are scrambling to keep up. For holidaymakers, checking local alerts and packing masks may be the new reality in a summer that keeps getting hotter.
