Finland Imposes New Airspace Restrictions Over Eastern Gulf of Finland

Finland’s defense forces have implemented a temporary no-fly zone over the eastern Gulf of Finland, marking the second such restriction in recent days. The measure took effect Monday, July 6, at approximately 6:10 a.m. local time, according to an announcement posted on the Finnish Defense Forces’ official social media account.

The move follows a similar restriction imposed early Saturday morning, when Finnish authorities also temporarily halted both air traffic and vessel passage in the same area. Officials have not yet disclosed the specific reasons behind these closures, though such measures are typically linked to military exercises or security operations.

The eastern Gulf of Finland is a strategically sensitive waterway, bordered by Russia to the east and south, and has seen increased military activity in recent years. Finland, which joined NATO in April 2023, has been tightening its monitoring of the region. The latest airspace restriction is expected to remain in effect for a limited period, though no end date has been announced.
