Finding Serenity in the Faroe Islands: A Travel Writer's Journey

After nearly a decade of living life on the road, travel writer Katie Lockhart has finally found a place to call home in the remote Faroe Islands. Lockhart first visited the self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark on a reporting assignment and was immediately drawn to its dramatic landscapes and deep sense of serenity. She has since made the Faroes her part-time residence, splitting her time between the islands and Vietnam. Lockhart's decision to move to the Faroes was motivated by a desire to escape the high cost of living in New York City and to find a more peaceful way of life. As a freelance travel writer, she is able to work from anywhere in the world, and the Faroes offer a unique and beautiful location from which to base her work. Despite the challenges of learning the Faroese language, Lockhart has found the local community to be welcoming and generous. She has made friends with her neighbors, including a single Faroese woman who has helped her with renovations and now manages her Airbnb property. Lockhart's typical day in the Faroes begins with a coffee and a view of the fjord, followed by a workout and a day of writing. She loves the quiet and peaceful nature of life in the Faroes, where everyone knows each other and community is highly valued. For Lockhart, the Faroes represent a chance to live a simpler, more meaningful life, one that is more in tune with her moral and ethical values. She feels grateful to have found a place where she can truly be herself and live the life she wants, and she has no plans to return to the US anytime soon.
