Family Sues Royal Caribbean After Toilet Seat Injures Toddler on Cruise

A three-year-old boy suffered severe genital injuries aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas when a toilet seat fell on him, according to a lawsuit filed by his family. The incident occurred during a five-day voyage from Shanghai to Incheon, South Korea, last June.

The boy was using the restroom on the first night of the trip when rough seas caused the seat to slam down. The ship’s doctor diagnosed a blunt-force injury to the groin, and the child experienced heavy bleeding. The family claims the seat lacked dampeners and that no warning signs were posted, calling it a serious safety failure. They have sued the cruise operator.

Royal Caribbean denies responsibility, stating the seat and lid were inspected and found to be in working order. The company suggests the boy’s mother may have accidentally knocked the seat down. The case highlights ongoing concerns about passenger safety at sea. In a separate incident, a three-year-old in India lost his penis after a botched circumcision by a local barber; surgeons at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow successfully reattached the organ eight hours later.
