Extreme Heat Forces Cancellation of Climate Forum in London

In a striking irony, a conference focused on the challenges of extreme heat was cancelled due to the very same issue. The event, titled 'Extreme Heat: Enhancing Management and Strengthening Measures Worldwide', was set to take place at the London School of Economics as part of London Climate Action Week. However, organizers were forced to call off the meeting after a red level weather warning was issued for the city. The warning, which remained in effect from 9 am on Wednesday to 9 pm on Thursday, prompted concerns for the safety and comfort of speakers and attendees. As the venue lacked air conditioning, a common issue in many London buildings, organizers felt it was unwise to expose participants to potentially hazardous conditions. The cancellation highlights the growing impact of extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to global warming. This trend is not limited to London, as experts warn that many regions, including Russia, may experience more frequent extreme weather phenomena in the future. The cancelled forum was organized by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, and its postponement serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the challenges posed by rising temperatures.
