Europe’s Summer Travel Boom: More Questions, Fewer Cancellations

A colleague recently asked me if we’ll ever see a normal summer of travel again. It’s a fair question, especially with global tensions making headlines and rerouting flights. But here’s the surprise: travelers aren’t canceling their European trips. They’re just asking more questions before they go.

Data from booking sites and travel agencies shows that demand for Europe—particularly Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal—is holding strong. Tom Barber of Original Travel notes that “Europe is considered a safe haven” and that clients are choosing it over long-haul destinations. Camilla Davidson at Red Savannah reports bookings to Europe are up 17% year on year. Skyscanner’s Laura Lindsay adds that cost remains top of mind, but “prices are not rising on every route… there are still deals to be found.”

Travelers are more cautious but not fearful. Debra Fox of Abercrombie & Kent says clients are “broadly confident, but more considered.” They’re spending more time researching, and when they commit, they’re spending more money. Cancellations are rare. Instead, people are building in flexibility—booking earlier, using layover filters, and opting for private villas. Davidson notes a 50% increase in villa bookings across Greece, Italy, France, and Spain.

Perception doesn’t always match reality. While some destinations near conflict zones—like Turkey—see slower growth, there have been no cancellation requests for Europe. Fox says hesitation is more about a general sense of unease than specific security fears.

Looking ahead, travelers are shifting toward northern and western Europe, including Scandinavia and Portugal’s less-crowded spots. The defining trait of the 2026 traveler? Flexibility, not fear. As Barber puts it, “When this is all over, we will have a post-Covid-style surge.” For now, the appetite to travel is alive and well—it’s just the plans that may change.
