Europe Sizzles: Record Heatwave Brings Chaos and Destruction

Al JazeeraSunday, June 28, 2026

A devastating heatwave is sweeping across Western Europe, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. Dozens of deaths have been linked to the extreme temperatures, which are expected to reach a scorching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Germany and Poland. On Friday, Germany recorded a new national high of 41C (106F) near Saarbrucken, according to the National Meteorological Service. The UK, France, and Switzerland have also recorded record June temperatures, with France being the hardest hit. The heatwave has disrupted rail travel, power generation, and outdoor events, and has even forced the Ironman European Championship to shorten its cycling and running segments. German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn is allowing customers to cancel long-distance travel bookings without charge due to the heatwave, which is putting a strain on the company's infrastructure. The heatwave is expected to peak over the weekend, with temperatures soaring well above 40C (104F) in some parts of Germany. As the region struggles to cope with the extreme heat, cultural landmarks have been forced to close, farming has suffered, and hospitals have been overwhelmed. The World Meteorological Organization has warned that the heatwave will begin to shift by the end of the month, affecting Central Europe and the Balkans. Scientists have attributed the heatwave to man-made climate change, which has made this week's night-time temperatures 100 times more likely than they would have been two decades ago. As Europe struggles to stay cool, demand for electric fans and air conditioners has skyrocketed, and public service providers are working to reduce traffic and minimize damage to infrastructure.
