Emergency Landing in Sochi Triggers Criminal Probe After Mid-Flight Distress Call

A Smartavia flight was forced to return to Sochi after issuing a distress signal over the Black Sea, prompting an investigation by Russian transport authorities. The aircraft, which had just departed from the coastal city, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff and made an unscheduled landing back at its origin airport. All 125 passengers aboard were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported. The Krasnodar Transport Investigation Department has launched a formal inquiry under Article 263, Part 1 of the Russian Criminal Code, which addresses violations of safety rules for the operation and movement of air transport. In a statement released Wednesday, the Western Interregional Transport Investigation Committee confirmed that officials are working to determine the exact cause of the incident. “We are examining all possible factors, including technical malfunctions and crew actions,” the statement read. The aircraft, operated by the low-cost carrier Smartavia, had been en route to an undisclosed destination when the crew activated the emergency transponder. Aviation experts note that such incidents, while rare, are taken extremely seriously under Russian law, which mandates a criminal review when safety protocols may have been breached. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the nature of the emergency.
