Eight-Year Wait for Justice: Tourist's Attacker Finally Sentenced in Tenerife

A Spanish court has sentenced a man to nine years in prison for the brutal 2018 assault of a 73-year-old British tourist on Tenerife, closing a case that stretched for nearly a decade. The victim, a pensioner who frequently vacationed on the Canary Island, was attacked in her rented villa on May 13 of that year.
The assailant climbed the property's fence and spent two hours inside the home. He repeatedly beat and raped the woman before forcing her to reveal the code to a safe, from which he stole cash and jewelry. The tourist provided a detailed statement to investigators but died several months after the attack from unrelated causes.
Police identified and arrested a suspect that summer, using footage from security cameras. Throughout the investigation and trial, the man maintained his innocence. The court, however, found the evidence against him overwhelming, citing the victim's testimony and conclusive DNA analysis.
The sentencing brings a long-delayed conclusion to a crime that shocked the popular holiday destination. In a separate report, Express noted a similar assault involving a Swedish tourist at a Thai resort, underscoring persistent safety concerns for travelers abroad.
