Egyptian Resorts Warn Tourists of Surgeon Fish Encounters

A string of incidents involving surgeon fish encounters has prompted Egyptian experts to advise tourists on how to minimize the risk of attacks at Red Sea resorts. Recently, Russian tourists took to social media to complain about experiencing puncture wounds and scratches after interactions with the fish in Egypt. The incidents have highlighted the need for awareness and precautions when interacting with marine life. According to Egyptian diving and marine sports expert Abdessalam Aoud, surgeon fish use their sharp spines solely for defense against predators when they feel threatened. Aoud emphasized that the fish are not inherently aggressive and that maintaining a safe distance and treating marine fauna with respect can guarantee tourist safety. To avoid encounters, tourists are advised to steer clear of areas where surgeon fish are nesting or spawning during their breeding season. As Waliid Hassan, director of the natural reserves department in Egypt's South Sinai province, explained, the fish's defensive behavior is primarily driven by the need to protect their nests and eggs during this period. By taking these precautions and being mindful of their surroundings, tourists can enjoy a safe and pleasant experience at Egyptian resorts.
