Egypt Hotels Under Scrutiny After Russian Tourist's Death as Poisoning Warnings Spread

Russian tourists heading to Egypt are now receiving urgent health advisories from travel agents following the tragic death of a 19-year-old woman at a resort in Hurghada. The warnings, reported by Russian outlet Baza, urge travelers to avoid tap water, skip ice in drinks, and use only bottled water for brushing teeth. The move comes after the young woman, identified as Regina, collapsed from severe food poisoning in early July, fell into a coma, and later died while vacationing with her family.

Travel agents are sending out detailed memos to clients, but many tourists say such warnings come too late—poisoning cases in Egyptian hotels have become disturbingly routine. Guests complain of identical symptoms: nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea. The most frequent complaints target Moreno Spa & Resort, Pickalbatros Dana Beach Resort, and several Rixos properties in Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. Vacationers blame contaminated water for their illnesses, pointing to lax hygiene standards in some facilities.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over Egypt's tourism industry, which relies heavily on Russian visitors. While the Egyptian authorities have not yet released an official statement on the incident, local tour operators are scrambling to reassure clients. For now, the message from agents is clear: treat every drop of water as a potential hazard. Whether this will be enough to restore confidence remains to be seen.
